EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
